In the March 2022 issue of the forschung leben magazine published by the University of Stuttgart, the role of researchers in the field of public engagement is explored. One of the articles presents the project “Questions for Colleague AI”, initiated by IRIS – the Interchange Forum for Reflecting on Intelligent Systems and carried out by researchers at the University of Stuttgart.
In the article, Daniel Völpel explains that the central aim of the project is to foster dialogue between science and society on the topic of artificial intelligence. Among those involved is Jun.-Prof. Maria Wirzberger, spokesperson of IRIS.
To encourage exchange between researchers and interested members of the public, several formats have been designed: a local discussion series, a seminar for students, and a virtual exchange. These events are intended to build upon one another — for example, contributions from the student seminar will serve as the basis for the virtual discussion in the third phase.
Overall, the project aims to encourage all participants to engage more deeply with questions surrounding artificial intelligence and to bring diverse perspectives into the conversation.
