2020

Prof. Dr. Kristina Kögler, who previously held the Chair of Business Education, specializing in teaching and learning processes, at the University of Hohenheim, will take over as head of the BWT in March 2020.

2018

Prof. Dr. phil. Reinhold Nickolaus' term of office ends at the end of February 2018. The professorship will be re-advertised.

2012

The establishment of the new vocational education/technical education degree program is also linked to the creation of the professorship in vocational education with a focus on technical education, which will be filled by Prof. Dr. Bernd Zinn in September 2012.

2010

Change in the structure of the program. The previous diploma program in technical education is being converted into consecutive BSc/MSc programs. In addition, as part of the double Abitur cohort in Baden-Württemberg (2012), the BA program in vocational education/technical education will be introduced in the 2010/11 winter semester. This program is geared toward fields of activity outside of vocational schools, in particular in-company training, and does not provide access to teaching positions. The program has been very well received. The Pedagogy/Vocational Education program, which was run jointly with the Department of Education, is being phased out.

2003

BA program in Education/Vocational Education: Following the Bologna Process, bachelor's and master's programs are being introduced at the University of Stuttgart to replace the phased-out master's programs. The BWT department is organizing the BA program in Education/Vocational Education in collaboration with the Education department.

2002

Change of chair: Prof. Dr. rer. pol. Karl-Heinz Sommer will retire on September 30, 2001. Prof. Dr. phil. Reinhold Nickolaus, who previously held a chair in vocational education at the University of Hanover, has been appointed as his successor. Prof. Nickolaus will be appointed on March 22, 2002.

Department of Vocational, Business, and Technical Education (BWT): As part of a reorganization of the institutes and faculties, the Chair of Vocational Education will move from the Faculty of Philosophy to the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences on October 1, 2002, and will become a department of the Institute of Education and Psychology. Other departments of the new institute are the Department of Education, the Department of Psychology, and the University Didactics Division.

1992

Institute for Vocational, Business, and Technical Education (BWT): In order to reflect the IBW's responsibility for the technical education degree program, the name of the institute was expanded in March 1992 to include the addition of “technical education.”

1991/2

Diploma program in technical education: The vocational teacher training program will be converted back into a diploma program in the winter semester of 1991/92. The program will be called technical education. The title awarded will be “Diploma in Vocational Education.” The program is analogous to the diploma program in Business Education, which leads to the title “Diploma in Business Education.”

1981

Master's program in vocational education: The BWT participates in the redesign of the master's program regulations and, starting in 1981, offers vocational education as a major and minor subject.

1979

Foundation of the Institute for Vocational and Business Education (IBW): The department separates from the Institute for Philosophy and Education and becomes an independent “Institute for Vocational and Business Education” within the Faculty of Philosophy in October 1979.

1973/4

Establishment of the Department of Vocational Education: The establishment of the Department of Vocational Education at the Institute of Philosophy and Education is linked to the appointment of Dr. rer. pol. Karl-Heinz Sommer as the first holder of the Chair of Vocational Education in the winter semester of 1973/74.

1970/1

Establishment of the Chair of Vocational Education: In the winter semester of 1970/71, the diploma program for vocational teachers was converted into a program for “higher teaching at vocational schools” leading to the “first state examination,” and at the same time, it was decided to establish a chair for vocational education.

1961/2

Second phase of vocational teacher training: In the winter semester of 1961/62, the diploma program for vocational teachers is taken over entirely by the Technical University.

1949

Vocational teacher training in cooperation: From 1949 onwards, the Technical University in Stuttgart is once again involved in a diploma course for vocational teachers at the Stuttgart Institute of Vocational Education.

1920- 1932

First phase of vocational teacher training: From 1920 to 1932, vocational teachers were trained at the Technical University in Stuttgart.
