The research activities of the Department of Vocational, Business, and Technical Education (BWT) focus on obtaining evidence-based explanatory approaches and statements regarding the success and optimal design and promotion of vocational teaching, learning, and work processes. In terms of research paradigms, a theory-driven, fundamentally oriented, and consistently empirical approach is pursued, which includes the development and use of both quantitative and qualitative research designs and field approaches, as well as the use of complex statistical evaluation methods.

- Professional competence assessment and learning process diagnostics in school, university, and workplace educational contexts,
- Design conditions and success factors for digital and hybrid teaching, learning, and working processes in education and training,
- Conditions for the emergence, progression, and effects of emotional and motivational experiential processes and their relevance for professional teaching and learning processes
- Forms, conflicts, and conditions of professional identity development in dual training
- Artificial intelligence as content and method in vocational education and training
